A minimum of 13 passengers killed and 98 wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this accident,” stated the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the year before. This project was closely associated with his government's economic vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The development of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in national infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, defying forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised significant questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an urgent pause in the building and running of all similar projects.

This pause was suggested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."

In response, the president maintained that the train had been operating in full accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national projects.
